Privacy policy

Last updated

SyrupDeals is a community for electronics deals in Canada. It is run by an individual in Ontario, Canada (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, and what you can do about it. We follow Canada’s federal privacy law for the private sector, PIPEDA.

The short version

  • You can browse deals, prices and price history without an account and without giving us anything.
  • For an account we need your email address and a username. Your username and what you post are public.
  • We only email you sign-in links and the price alerts you asked for.
  • We don’t sell your information and we don’t use advertising or tracking cookies.

What we collect and why

  • Email address – to send you sign-in links (we don’t use passwords) and the price alerts you set up. It is never shown on the site.
  • Username – shown next to the deals, comments and votes you make.
  • What you post – deals (title, link, price, store, description), comments and votes. These are public and linked to your username.
  • Price alerts – the product, your target price, when we last emailed you, and a record of the consent you gave (the wording you agreed to and when), as Canada’s anti-spam law (CASL) requires.
  • Technical information – our hosting and database providers record IP addresses and similar request details in their logs to keep the service running and secure. We don’t use them to build profiles.

Cookies

We only use cookies that keep you signed in. There are no analytics, advertising or social media cookies. If we ever add analytics, we will update this page first.

When you follow a link to a store, that store or its affiliate network may set its own cookies to credit the sale to us. Their privacy policies apply to that. See our affiliate disclosure.

Emails

Every price alert email has a link to stop that alert, and you can manage all alerts on My alerts. We don’t send newsletters or marketing unless you separately ask for them.

Who processes your information

We use these service providers to run SyrupDeals. They only process your information on our behalf:

  • Supabase – database and sign-in
  • Vercel – website hosting
  • Resend – sending emails

Your information may be stored and processed outside Canada, including in the United States, where it can be subject to the laws of that country.

How long we keep it

We keep your account information as long as you have an account. When your account is deleted, your email address, username, comments, votes and price alerts are deleted too. Deals you posted may stay on the site without your username, because other people’s votes and comments depend on them. Server logs at our providers are kept for a limited time set by them.

Your rights

You can ask us to:

  • tell you what personal information we hold about you and give you a copy,
  • correct information that is wrong,
  • delete your account and the information linked to it,
  • stop using your information for a purpose you consented to, such as price alert emails.

Email hello@syrupdeals.ca from the address on your account. We answer within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Children

SyrupDeals is not meant for children. You must be at least 16 years old to create an account.

Security

Connections are encrypted, there are no passwords to leak, and our database only lets each person change their own information. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach puts you at real risk, we will tell you and the Privacy Commissioner as the law requires.

Changes and contact

If we change this policy, we update the date at the top. For important changes we will also tell signed-in users on the site. The person responsible for privacy at SyrupDeals can be reached at hello@syrupdeals.ca.
